How the Matching Algorithm Works
To determine which Pantone color matches your input best, our converters put both colors in the same color space and measure the distance between them. The HEX, RGB, CMYK, HSL and image to Pantone tools use a weighted RGB distance:
d = √((2(R₁ - R₂))² + (4(G₁ - G₂))² + (3(B₁ - B₂))²)The weights give green the most influence and red the least, roughly following how sensitive the eye is to each channel. The swatches with the smallest distance are returned as the closest matches, each with a similarity percentage (a distance of 0 is 100% similarity).
The cross-system converters — RAL, NCS, HKS, paint brands, craft materials and TCX — and the Lab to Pantone and HSV to Pantone tools work differently: they convert both colors to CIELAB and rank matches by CIEDE2000 (ΔE*00), the standard formula for perceived color difference. Those results show the ΔE*00 value itself rather than a similarity percentage.

The Pantone Matching System (PMS) is a standardized color reproduction system. By assigning a unique number and name to each color, Pantone allows manufacturers, designers, and printers to specify and match colors precisely, regardless of the equipment used.
Q:What is the difference between Coated (C) and Uncoated (U)?
Coated (indicated by a 'C' suffix like '186 C') means the color is formulated for glossy, coated paper where ink sits on top of the surface, resulting in brighter, more vibrant colors. Uncoated (indicated by a 'U' suffix) is formulated for matte, uncoated paper where the ink is absorbed, resulting in a softer, more muted appearance.
Q:How does the color converter find a match?
It depends on the tool. The HEX, RGB, CMYK, HSL and image to Pantone converters turn your input into RGB and rank the coated or uncoated Pantone swatches by a weighted RGB distance, which gives green the most weight and red the least to roughly follow the eye's sensitivity.
