HEX to CMYK: What a Printer Means by “Send Me CMYK”

A printer asking for CMYK usually wants one of two things. Sometimes it is artwork already separated into the four process inks, so nothing unexpected happens when the file reaches their workflow. More often it is a number to aim at for a brand colour, because a hex code from a website tells a press operator nothing they can act on.

Either way, the conversion runs in two stages, since a hex code is only a compact way of writing RGB:

  1. Decode the code: #C8102E is red 200, green 16 and blue 46.
  2. Find black from the strongest channel: 1 − 200 ÷ 255 leaves 0.216, so K is 22%.
  3. Share out the remaining darkness: magenta is (1 − 16 ÷ 255 − 0.216) ÷ 0.784, or 92%, yellow is (1 − 46 ÷ 255 − 0.216) ÷ 0.784, or 77%, and cyan stays at zero.

What to Send Instead of a Single Number

A HEX to CMYK result on its own invites the printer to guess. A useful colour handoff answers the questions a press operator would otherwise have to ask, and it fits comfortably on one page:

  • The screen reference. The hex value, so everyone agrees which colour the brand means on screen.
  • A Pantone reference. The PMS number the brand has chosen, or the closest match if none exists yet, with a note saying which it is.
  • A starting CMYK build. Clearly labelled as a starting point, plus the profile it was made with if one was used.
  • The finish. Whether the job runs on coated or uncoated stock, since the same ink reads differently on each.
  • A physical target. A printed sample, a swatch-book chip or an approved proof that can sit next to the press sheet.

The artwork matters as much as the numbers. Vector logos with the colour defined as a named swatch survive handoff far better than flattened images, and a swatch set up as a spot colour stays a spot colour unless someone deliberately decides otherwise.

A simple way to lay all of this out is one row per brand colour: its name, hex, RGB, Pantone coated, Pantone uncoated, starting CMYK build and a note on where it may be used. Version the sheet and date every change, so a printer who receives files months later can tell whether the build they hold is still the current one.

Why a PMS Code Belongs Next to Every CMYK Build

A Pantone number gives the printer something a CMYK build cannot: a physical, published colour to match. Presses and papers vary, so two printers given the same build can produce visibly different results, while two printers given the same PMS reference can both check their sheets against the same swatch.

It also keeps a better route open. Plenty of brand colours sit outside what four-colour process printing can reach, and for those a spot ink is the only way to hold the colour. With the reference supplied from the start, the printer can recommend running it as a spot wherever the job allows.

Brand Colour Handoff Checklist

  1. Confirm the master value. Decide whether the brand colour is defined by its hex code, its Pantone number or a measured sample, and write that decision down.
  2. Choose the Pantone reference in both finishes. Check the coated and uncoated versions in a physical guide, because the uncoated ink can look noticeably different.
  3. Generate a starting CMYK build and label it as a starting build in every document it appears in.
  4. Ask about the press. Find out which profile, paper and ink limit the job will use, and whether the printer wants to make the final separation.
  5. Prepare the artwork. Supply vector files with named swatches, and set small text in a single ink.
  6. Send a physical colour target with the files, not a screenshot.
  7. Approve from a hard proof printed on the real stock rather than from a monitor.
  8. Record the approved result. Keep the press sheet, date, printer and stock, so the next run can be matched to this one.

Samsung Blue is listed as C:100 M:75 Y:0 K:37 where the formula gives C:88 M:75 Y:0 K:37. Treat every build here as a starting point, and ask the brand owner for their published values before a job goes to press.

The PMS column carries its own lesson: Rosso Corsa, Netflix Red and LEGO Red are all listed against Pantone 485-C, although their hex codes differ. A PMS reference names the nearest ink in a finite library, not a unique identity, so two brands can share one while their screen colours stay distinct.

Mistakes That Derail a Brand Print Run

  • Sending RGB images and hoping.If a logo arrives as an RGB JPEG, the conversion to CMYK happens somewhere in the printer's workflow with whatever settings happen to be in place, and nobody has agreed what the colour should be.
  • Letting every supplier convert independently. A business card printer, a sign maker and a packaging supplier will each derive their own build from the same hex code; a shared Pantone reference and one agreed build keep them aligned.
  • Approving on screen. A backlit monitor makes almost any build look acceptable, so colour sign-off belongs on a printed proof.
  • Forgetting the uncoated version. Letterheads and business cards are often printed on uncoated paper, and a colour approved on glossy stock can look flat and dark there — see how coated and uncoated inks differ.
  • Building small text from four inks. Fine type made from a four-colour build depends on perfect registration, so keep it to one ink or print it as a spot colour.
  • Changing the colour between runs. When a brand colour is adjusted on the website, the print build does not update itself; decide whether print should follow, and tell every supplier at the same time.
