Smooth, fine texture and textured finishes

A RAL code fixes a colour, not a surface. Powder-coating suppliers commonly offer RAL 7016 as a smooth matt, satin or gloss finish and in fine-textured and textured versions, and each looks different even when the pigment is matched exactly.

Gloss changes how much light a surface reflects straight back. A glossy panel shows a sharp highlight and, away from it, tends to look deeper and darker; a matt panel scatters light evenly and tends to look lighter and flatter. On a dark colour such as RAL 7016 the difference is easy to see. Gloss is specified separately from the colour, usually in gloss units measured at 60°, and where matt ends and satin or gloss begins differs between suppliers.

Smooth

An even film in matt, satin or gloss. It shows the colour most uniformly, and on a dark colour it also shows dust, scratches and fingerprints most readily.

Fine texture

A slightly rough, low-gloss powder coating, often sold as fine structure (Feinstruktur). It is hard-wearing and good at hiding small surface flaws, one reason it is often chosen for frames and fences.

Textured

A coarser, more pronounced texture. The small shadows in the surface make the colour look less even, and it can read slightly darker than a smooth panel.

When parts come from different suppliers (window frames, a garage door and a fence, say), specify the RAL code together with the gloss level and the texture, and compare physical samples of the same finish under the same light. Coatings from different manufacturers can differ even when all are sold as RAL 7016 fine texture.

How we calculate

Every value on this page comes from our RAL data: an sRGB HEX value (D65 white point), its RGB channels, CIELAB under D65, and CMYK from a simple formula with no printer profile, so treat the CMYK as a starting point for print. The Pantone matches and the comparisons use the CIEDE2000 colour difference (ΔE2000) between CIELAB values, the same calculation as the RAL to Pantone and HEX to RAL converters. Lighter and darker compare CIELAB L*, and the summary at the top calls a colour dark below L* 35 and light from L* 65.

Published screen (HEX and RGB) equivalents for RAL colours differ between sources. Ours are approximations of a physical standard, so check a physical RAL fan deck for exact work.
