What is Isacord?

Isacord is a polyester machine-embroidery thread made by Amann, a German manufacturer of sewing and embroidery threads. It is widely run on commercial multi-head machines, where uniforms, caps and promotional goods are stitched in quantity.

Shops reach for polyester over rayon when the garment will be washed hard. Uniforms, workwear, chef coats and sports kit go through hot industrial laundering, and polyester generally keeps its color through hot washes and bleach better than rayon does, while still giving embroidery its sheen.

Every Isacord color has a four-digit code, and the leading zeros are part of it: 0015 is White and 0020 is Black, and writing “15” or “20” on an order invites a mix-up. The code is a catalog number, not a description — like a Pantone number, it tells you nothing about the color until you look it up.

The palette used here lists 398 Isacord thread codes. In 10 places two or three codes carry exactly the same color value in the source data, which leaves 387 distinct colors to match against.

Where two codes appear in one cell (“3335 / 3544”), the threads share the same color value in our data. The chart is our own ΔE*00 calculation, not a copy of any manufacturer’s conversion chart.

Who converts Pantone to Isacord?

A Pantone-to-Isacord lookup is the step between a brand guide written for print and a thread order a production floor can run. The full workflow from brand guide to approved sew-out covers the steps either side of it.

  • Embroidery digitizers — The artwork arrives with Pantone callouts and the stitch file needs a thread color for every stop. Converting first means the color sequence in the file already names real thread codes.
  • Promotional-product decorators — Caps, polos and bags for a corporate order carry the client’s Pantone colors. A thread code on the quote sets expectations before the sample is sewn, not after.
  • Uniform and workwear makers — One program often puts the same logo on a poly-cotton shirt, a softshell jacket and a cap, and the thread reads differently on each. The ranked list gives two or three candidates to sew out on every fabric.
  • Graphic designers handing off to a shop — A designer who sends “Pantone 186 C, nearest Isacord 1904” gives the decorator a starting point and shows which colors are likely to need a compromise.
  • Quoting and approvals — A ΔE figure is a quick way to flag the colors that need a physical sew-out for approval, rather than sending every color for sign-off.

How to use this Pantone to Isacord converter

Say the client’s brand guide calls for Pantone 186 C and Cool Gray 9 C on a polo order:

  1. Take each Pantone color from the brand guide and enter it in the search box — “186”, “Cool Gray 9” — then pick it from the suggestions.
  2. Read the five closest Isacord threads, ranked from the smallest ΔE*00 upward, and note whether the best one is a close match or only the nearest option.
  3. Put the Isacord code into the color stops of the digitizing file, so the sew-out and the production run use the same thread.
  4. Write both codes on the work order — “Pantone 186 C / Isacord 1904” — so whoever re-orders the job later knows what the thread was matched to.
  5. Before ordering cones, compare the top two or three candidates on a physical Isacord thread card in daylight, against the actual garment color.
  6. For colors without a close match, sew a test patch on the production fabric and get it approved before the full run.

Why thread never matches ink exactly

A Pantone chip is ink lying flat on paper. Embroidery is a raised surface of twisted, shiny filaments, and even a thread that measures identical to the ink on a spectrophotometer will look different once it is stitched. These are the main reasons:

  • Sheen and light direction — Polyester thread reflects light along its length. The same thread looks lighter where the stitches run toward the light and darker where they run across it, so one color can read as two shades within the same logo.
  • Satin versus fill stitches — Long satin stitches show the most sheen and read brightest; dense fill (tatami) stitches break the light up and read deeper and flatter. A letter in satin and a background in fill, sewn in one thread, will not look like the same color.
  • Underlay and fabric showing through — Light threads over dark garments pick up the fabric color between stitches, and low-density areas let more of it through. White on navy reads cooler and grayer than white on white.
  • Density and thread weight — More stitches per area means more thread and less fabric in view, which shifts the color toward the thread’s true value. Changing density between the sample and the run changes the color.
  • Dye lots — Thread is dyed in batches, and two cones of the same code from different lots can differ slightly. On large or re-ordered jobs, use cones from one lot where you can.
  • Screen versus physical — Every value on this page is an sRGB screen approximation, and your monitor adds its own error. Only a physical thread card under daylight shows the real color.
  • Fluorescent threads — Our data lists 2 Isacord threads with “neon” in the name. Fluorescence cannot be shown on a screen, so their on-screen values are especially unreliable — judge them only in person.

Accuracy — read before you specify a color

Isacord thread values here are sRGB approximations of dyed polyester, not measurements of stitched thread. Isacord also has far fewer colors than the Pantone coated deck — 387 distinct values against 1,565 — so large parts of Pantone space have no close thread, and the converter says so rather than presenting the nearest option as a match. Use the code it gives you as the first cone to compare, then confirm with a physical Isacord thread card.

Every result is ranked by ΔE*00 (CIEDE2000). Below 1 is imperceptible, 1–2 is a commercial match, 2–5 is visible side by side, and above 5 the colors read as different. Across the whole Pantone coated deck the median nearest Isacord match lands around ΔE 4.1: about 69% of Pantone colors have a thread under ΔE 5, and only about 11% have one under ΔE 2. A result in the Good band is a reasonable starting point; anything worse needs a physical check before it goes on an order.

In short: conversion values on this page are approximate, because the two systems use different colorants and cover different gamuts. Verify against a physical color standard before committing to production, tooling or a signed-off brand spec.

Frequently Asked Questions

No Isacord thread is a close match for Pantone 390 C. The nearest option is 0442 Tarnished Gold at ΔE*00 4.67 — a difference you can see up close — followed by 5912 Erin Green (ΔE 6.09) and 0542 Ochre (ΔE 6.59). Despite its name, Tarnished Gold is the closest thread to this lime green, so judge by the swatch rather than the name, and check a physical thread card before ordering. For 389 C, the lighter neighbor, the nearest thread is 6031 Limelight at ΔE 4.62.
Thread manufacturers and distributors publish their own Pantone reference charts. This page is not one of them: it is an independent approximation that ranks every Isacord color by ΔE*00 against the site’s own Pantone values, and it does not reproduce any manufacturer’s chart. Where a manufacturer’s reference and this tool disagree, check both candidates on a physical thread card.
1904 Cardinal, at ΔE*00 2.54, which is in the Good band — close enough for most logo work, though visible side by side. The next option is 1805 Strawberry at ΔE 4.28. Sew both on the production fabric if the red is critical to the brand.
Because Black 6 C is a blue-black. Measured as a color, it sits nearer 3574 Darkest Blue at ΔE 4.82 than 0020 Black at ΔE 7.57. Many shops will still stitch a plain black, but if a brand specifies Black 6 C deliberately, the dark blue is the closer thread.
Match to the thread your shop actually stocks. All three brands make machine-embroidery thread, and each numbers its colors in its own way, so a code from one brand means nothing to another. Isacord is a polyester thread; the Madeira palette available to this site is a rayon range, and Robison-Anton is available here in both polyester and rayon. Polyester is the usual choice for garments that are washed hard, rayon for its sheen on decorative work. Converting from the Pantone reference to each brand separately is more reliable than converting thread to thread.
Use whatever the brand guide specifies, which for logos is usually the coated (C) reference. This converter matches against the coated deck. Uncoated (U) chips are the same ink printed on uncoated paper and look duller, so they are rarely the target for a glossy polyester thread; if a guide gives only a U reference, ask the client which physical sample they consider correct before you match.
In the source data, 21 Isacord codes fall into 10 groups that share an exact color value — for example 3335 Flag Blue and 3544 Sapphire. Since the converter cannot tell them apart, it lists them as one result, and its top five is always five different colors. The physical threads may still differ slightly, so compare both cones.
It can. Light threads over dark garments let the fabric show through between stitches and read darker and cooler, especially in low-density fills. On a dark garment it is worth testing the top two candidates, or adding a denser underlay, before committing to a code.

Where these numbers come from

Isacord thread colors are adapted from the thread palettes of Ink/Stitch, the open-source machine-embroidery extension for Inkscape, which publishes them under the GNU GPL-3.0 license (retrieved 2026-10-13). Each thread is an sRGB value, not a spectral measurement of the physical thread.

Pantone values come from this site’s own approximate dataset — the same values used across the PMS Color Browser and every other converter here — and are not Pantone data.

Matching converts both colors to CIELAB and ranks every Isacord color by ΔE*00 (CIEDE2000). The converter, the worked examples, the popular matches and the conversion chart all run that same calculation on the same data.
